The electric car is coming.


Unlike most things in these days of economic turmoil, you can take that to the bank. But while many automakers have made some sort of commitment to offer some form of electric car, the major question is: Will we buy it?

Well, the promotion has begun. And here are 10 reasons why many pundits say that, Yes, we will be buying electric cars.

1. There is no engine. Think about the savings in gas and maintenance. And there are four electric motors that run the electric car so if one motor goes out, you still have the other three churning along. The now available space can be used by batteries that provide the vehicle with the longer range we all want. There is a new mini vehicle hybrid electric vehicle that has been said to have a range of 900 miles. Wow!

2. Electric cars will be reliable. There is no doubt about that. And there is evidence of that already. There is an electric car that runs on solar power that has driven around the world. Double Wow!

3. The electric car can actually save you money in the long run. They may be more expensive to buy initially, but you will no doubt save on the maintenance and fuel costs.

4. Solar roofs that can be used to provide energy to run the vehicles will provide free power from the sun. Solar panels have already been developed to achieve this and a Prius has been modified to include a solar roof which has been proven to extend its range and make driving even cheaper.

5. They are quiet. Walking on the streets of a large city could be almost a pleasure because it will be so quiet once the old gas engine cars make their way to the junkyard.

6. Samples like the Tesla Roadster already exist which show the benefits: 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds; doesn’t burn oil; travels 244 miles per charge; costs pennies per mile.

7. No infrastructure. The cars can be filled up so to speak by just plugging them into an electrical socket.

8. Besides being able to put solar panels on the roof of the vehicle, transparent solar panels have already been invented that can be put on the windshield providing more capability to turn sun light into energy and thus more range.

9. Believe it or not, there are companies that are developing “Solar Paint” -- paint that can generate electricity. So with solar panels on the roof and windshield and solar energy also coming from the paint on the surface of the vehicle, there is no chance that the car will be without power. Wow! Wow! Wow!

10. Finally, it will end once and for all our dependence on foreign oil -- wait, it will eliminate our need for any oil.

2009 Nissan Murano pricing and specs

Nissan Australia has announced the official pricing and specifications for its second generation Murano SUV.

It boasts an evolutionary design over the original Murano launched five years ago, which Nissan claim spawned the cross over genre.

Local models will receive a more powerful 3.5-litre V6 engine which develops 191kW of power and 336Nm at 4400rpm.



On the combined cycle, the new Murano uses 10.9 litres of petrol per 100kms while producing 259 grams per 100kms of CO2.

    “The basic engine architecture hasn’t changed, but attention to fine detail has helped develop an engine that not only delivers more power, but does so using less fuel and producing fewer emissions.” says Nissan Motor Co. (Australia) Managing Director and CEO, Dan Thompson.


The engine is mated to a revised six-speed Xtronic CVT gearbox which has been optimised for quicker and more intuitive shifts.

Power is transferred to the ground through an intelligent all mode four-wheel-drive system with electronic 4WD selection and lock mode, including Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Active Brake limited Slip and Traction Control System (TCS).


Standard features include push button start, double stitched leather seat trim, leather steering wheel and gear knob, dual zone climate control, cruise control, six-stacker stereo system with MP3 auxiliary input and six speakers plus steering wheel audio controls.

The flagship Ti variant adds front heated seats, a BOSE audio system with 11 speakers including two subwoofers, satellite navigation, reverse parking camera and hands free Bluetooth phone system.


The new Nissan Murano arrives in Australia priced at $45,990 for the ST model and $55,890 for the Ti model.

Barack Obama, Your Limousine is Ready

The Presidential changing of the guard officially happens in one week, and when Barack Obama stakes the stand as Commander in Chief of the United States, General Motors will have its latest Cadillac Presidential Limousine waiting.

While GM was very shy to release the full specifications of the limo (for obvious reasons), it's clear that Obama's ride will be a mix of GM parts, notably the Escalade headlamps and DTS rear end, all riding on the platform shared with GM's heavy-duty pickups. Expect this special limo to be full of technological gadgetry suitable only for Citizen Number One.

    The image of an American president greeting crowds from a Cadillac limousine dates to President Woodrow Wilson and the early days of the automobile, and continues into a historic new era. The latest Cadillac Presidential Limousine is a completely new design, succeeding the DTS Presidential Limousine that debuted in 2004. The new car incorporates many of the dramatic design and technology features of new and highly acclaimed Cadillac vehicles in a purpose-built format tailored to specific and exacting specifications befitting presidential transport.

    Inside and out, the Cadillac Presidential Limousine includes many of the brand's signature design elements. Assertive, modern and elegant, the front of the car includes the intricate, dual-textured grille made famous by Cadillac's most popular current models, the CTS sport sedan and Escalade. Vertical design elements, such as the car's front and rear lighting, mirror those used on production models.

    For largely functional reasons, such as optimal outward visibility, the car is slightly more upright than its predecessor. However, this new Cadillac Presidential Limousine occupies roughly the same overall footprint on the road as the previous model, with a similar size and proportion.

    The side and rear profiles of the new Presidential Limousine are classic, elegant forms, evocative of Cadillac's STS and DTS luxury sedans. Inside the cabin, the car includes the finest examples of Cadillac's recent renaissance in design, technology and craftsmanship. The cabin blends modern design and technology with old-world craftsmanship. Major aspects of the cabin are cut and sewn by hand, the same process used in popular Cadillac models such as the CTS sport sedan.


    Naturally, many purpose-built aspects of the car are specially designed and prepared for presidential use. The rear passenger area includes an extensive executive compartment with ample seating space, outward visibility and useful mobile office features.

    The car was designed, developed and tested by specialists who adhered to an extensive set of specifications. It was subjected to an extreme testing regimen to ensure performance that achieves precise functional requirements. In doing so, security provisions were undertaken at all times during development to ensure the car's functional capabilities are preserved and confidential.

    An embroidered presidential seal is positioned in the center of the rear seat back panel, as well as on each rear door trim panel. Presidential seals are also affixed to the exterior rear doors.     History – Cadillac and the U.S. Presidency
    Cadillac has built limousines and special vehicles for U.S. presidents, diplomats, ambassadors and foreign dignitaries since the early 20th century, an iconic aspect of the brand that continues today.

    Cadillac's central role began during World War I, when many Cadillac engines and cars were transferred to military and government service because of their superior durability and power. One of the first chief executives to use a Cadillac was President Wilson, who rode through the streets of Boston during a World War I victory parade in 1919. A lavish 1928 Cadillac town car was used in the Calvin Coolidge administration.

    In 1938, two Cadillac convertibles, dubbed the "Queen Mary" and "Queen Elizabeth," were delivered to the U.S. government. Named after the great ocean liners of the time, the vehicles were 21.5 feet long, weighed 7,660 pounds and were equipped with a full ammunition arsenal, two-way radios and heavy-duty generators.     The Ronald W. Reagan administration was delivered a 1983 Cadillac Fleetwood limousine and a Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham – Presidential Series was delivered to the William J. Clinton administration in 1993. Unlike previous models that typically were Cadillac cars adapted and modified by independent limousine companies, the 1993 Presidential Brougham was designed, developed and manufactured totally within General Motors and Cadillac. This included an extensive set of security measures to maintain confidentiality, a process that continues today.

    Currently, the 1983 Cadillac Fleetwood limousine resides at the Ronald W. Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, Calif., while the 1993 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham is at the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, Ark.

The Screaming Eagle made by Jack Holt, is one powerful destructive car. Jack designed the body himself, using T1 steel for the lower half and 10 gauge steel for the upper half. Apart from the two seats, the car also has a 64-inch bunk bed and two hydraulic canopies. Power comes from a V8 sourced from a tugboat, mated to an eight-speed hydraulic transmission.

The car can withstand fire from light weapons, and can crack through brick walls, presumably without even breaking a sweat. This 18,000 pound vehicle took 3700 man-hours to complete, and can run at a top speed of 90mph, with fuel efficiency hovering between 10-15mpg (diesel).

Moving probably on the same theory, Jimmy Wong from Hong Kong gave his 2002 Lotus Elise an all-carbon fiber body. Going all carbon, inside and out, the car lost about 30-40 kg of its weight, in the six-month long process.

Along with the changes in the body, other changes like a KW Suspension, Lotus Racing Exhaust and a larger intake were also included. Though there hasn’t been a huge change in the available power, the change itself is commendable.

Nissan brought out Altima, the hot selling car in 2001. The Japanese automaker introduced its second generation in 2006, toughening the sedan’s popularity. With an aim of broadening its overall appeal, Nissan introduced a hybrid version of the car in January. And the much-awaited coupe has at last arrived.

When compared with other coupes, the Altima is not just a two-door version of the sedan. The engineers from Nissan has shortened the wheelbase by 101 mm,
Cut the overall length by 185 mm and lowered the height by 66 mm, giving the coupe a handsome look that could turn heads.

The coupe has the only sheet metal shared between two- and four-door Altimas is the hood. It has been endowed with a pair of idiosyncratic bucket seats with striking side bolsters for extra lateral support. The back of the coupe is a 60/40 split rear bench that extends the cargo space. The feature is ideal for a weekend of skiing or to hold few odds and sods from the store. It has a more conventional parking-brake hand lever substituting the sedan’s foot-operated control.
Power is the other big difference between the models. The base car is equipped with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that successfully generates 175 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, which is more than enough to be amusing when mated to the six-speed manual box. A big part for the spirited drive is attributed to the transmission’s close ratios and a light, progressive clutch that puts the bite point in the precise place.

The suspension is firmer and the steering is also adequately weighted and responsive when turned off-centre. Apart from this, the coupe include the Nissan headlight bulb, a push-button start, the dual-zone climate control, cruise control and heated seats, power mirrors, windows and sunroof, a six-speaker audio system with an auxiliary plug-in, six air bags and standard anti-lock brakes that assures that this enticing model will provide an admirable driving experience on roads.

Drive-Throughs Come to the Ferris Wheel

Amusement parks are sick, but they are just not efficient, like you have to drive around to find a spot and park your car and then walk everywhere. I mean, they have figured out food and money with drive-throughs, man can drive on the moon, why can't they solve amusement parks? Wait- it seems that they have.



Dutch artist John Körmeling has built a 100 foot diameter wheel that can take four cars on a trip.


Never again will you have to stand in long lines in the sun; now you can relax in the comfort of your car with the air cranked up while you wait your turn.

Supercharged Lotus Evora On The Way With At least 350hp


This is just too good to pass up and not mention, Lotus makers of all things light and tossable, have already announced a variant for their upcoming, but not-out-to-the-public Evora 2+2.

Boasting an output of at least 350 horsepower, the Evora variant will use the same 3.5L Toyota-sourced V6 as the base model, only with a blower firmly attached. Torque will also be bumped up to nearly 300 lb-ft mark in production form. Given the cars already light weight, those figures should be enough to scoot the Evora SC to 60 in 5 seconds flat and boost the car’s terminal speed to 175 mph, according England’s to Autocar Magazine. Although it is expected to arrive on the market in May 2009, the super charged version is slated to arrive sometime in 2011.

Lotus is keeping busy with even more versions of the Evora after the jump.

In addition to the upcoming SC, Lotus is working on a more luxurious versions of the Evora aimed squarely at the higher end of its current list of high-profile clientele. Lotus is also working on an [shudder] automatic transmission for the Evora, largely due to strong demand in the U.S. [What the hell is wrong with you people?] The Lotus with the slush box (I can’t believe I’m writing that) will come well past the introduction of base Evora. “Right now, it’s looking unlikely that we’ll have the auto version next year,” a Lotus spokesman told Autocar. “There’s quite a lot of development work still to be done on it.” Let’s just pretend he didn’t say that and move on, shall we?

Wait, there’s STILL more versions of this car in the pipeline.

Lotus is working on a roadster version of the Evora. The drop-top Evora will sport a retractable metal hardtop, which, although adding weight, will not be overly heavy. Engineers at Lotus are working hard to ensure the unit doesn’t compromise the car’s overall handling. Expect the Evora roadster in showrooms in late 2010.

Specialty designer and production car maker Revenge Designs, unveiled its GTM-R Super Car today at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The automaker said the US$145,000 Revenge GTM-R Super Car is powered by a General Motors LS7 engine rated at 376kW.

Fitted with a roll cage, Pirelli tyres and beefy performance brakes it also comes with a remote-controlled air ride adjustable suspension that provides a setting for ride, competition or anti-theft park mode.

Headquartered in northeastern Indiana, Revenge Designs is run by president and CEO Peter Collorafi, a vehicle designer from Queensland, Australia, who has been designing and installing custom modifications for factory-produced vehicles since 1980, including the Revenge GTO that won best Exterior Design at the Spring 2007 SEMA expo.

The Formula AE, with a prototype expected to come as early as August, could be a breakthrough in clean energy powered cars. Power will mainly come from paper-thin solar panels on the car, capable of fully charging the car in just 1.5 hours, the makers currently are looking at another battery prototype that will be fully charged in a seemingly impossible six minutes. A full charge will allow the vehicle to go 200 miles before the battery runs out.

Four air intakes, two at the front and one each on the sides, will channel the air towards a turbine, taking care of about 20 to 25 percent of the car’s electricity needs. Wind power acts as an auxiliary source of energy, ensuring the solar powered battery doesn’t drain out too fast. An alternating current induction motor will provide a mighty 212kW power to the car, allowing it to reach 155 mph top speed; with a zero to 60mph taking less than four seconds.

To keep the car light, the body and chassis have been built of lightweight aluminum and super strong steel, in a monocoque design. If the car makes it to production, it is likely to cost £100,000.

Crystal Covered Mercedes Is A Piece Of Crap

This is a picture of a Mercedes Benz that's been Bedazzled. It's a "customized Mercedes-Benz SL600, Luxury Crystal Benz, studded with 300,000 Swarovski crystal glass." It was on display at the recent Tokyo Auto Salon 2009 by auto-modder Garson/D.A.D. Oh, did I mention it's a monster piece of gaudy crap? It's true. Fun fact: if you squeeze a Swarovski crystal between your buttcheeks hard enough it turns into pain. Neat!

It was on display at the recent Tokyo Auto Salon 2009 by auto-modder Garson/D.A.D. Oh, did I mention it's a monster piece of gaudy crap? It's true. Fun fact: if you squeeze a Swarovski crystal between your buttcheeks hard enough it turns into pain. Neat!
